A Simple Mindfulness Exercise on the Miracle of Life

A Simple Mindfulness Exercise on the Miracle of Life

Recently I (Abby) took my students through the following mindfulness exercise during our Morning Movement + Meditation class. We took some time to consider the gift and wonder of being here - alive in this world and in a body that holds a whole other 'world' inside. In our human existence, we can easily get caught up in the worries of life, the mundane, the to-do's, and even the subtle messages of social media. If you take a moment to ponder it, you may find a deeper awareness of what an incredible mystery and privilege it is to be here. And with deeper awareness, comes deeper appreciation which can make life even more rich and meaningful.

The exercise was inspired by a quote from one of my favorite poets, John O'Donohugh. He writes;

“It is a strange and wonderful fact to be here, walking around in a body, to have a whole world within you and a world at your fingertips outside you. It is an immense privilege, and it is incredible that humans manage to forget the miracle of being here. Rilke said, ‘Being here is so much,’ and it is uncanny how social reality can deaden and numb us so that the mystical wonder of our lives goes totally unnoticed. We are here. We are wildly and dangerously free.”
